Commodores Eliminated From NJCAA Region 12 Tournament
May 6, 2026 - - The Lorain County Community College baseball team concluded its 2026 season Wednesday at the NJCAA Region 12 Division III Tournament at Sports Force Parks in Sandusky, Ohio. The Commodores opened postseason play against Terra State Community College, losing 12-4, before facing Owens Community College in an elimination game later in the day, falling 10-3.
Opening Round – LCCC 4, Terra State 12
Terra State scored five runs in the opening inning and continued to build its lead as the Titans defeated LCCC 12-4 in the first round of the NJCAA Region 12 DIII Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Sports Force Parks.
Carlos Grell (Cleveland, Ohio/Garrett Morgan School) led the Commodores offensively, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run, double, two RBIs, two runs scored, and a walk. Grell put LCCC on the board in the fourth inning with a solo home run to right field before adding an RBI double in the seventh inning.
Leo Soneson (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood HS) recorded a hit and two RBIs, including an RBI double in the sixth inning that scored Grell. Soneson later added another RBI on a groundout in the seventh inning that brought home Jacob Kania (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/Berea-Midpark HS).
Daithin Kent (Union City, Pa./Union City HS) and Jacob Sanders (Columbia Station, Ohio/Columbia HS) each collected a hit, while Michael Gonzalez (Cleveland, Ohio/John Marshall HS) reached base twice with a hit, a walk, and a run scored. Kania also added a hit and scored once.
On the mound, Dylan Coughlin (Amherst, Ohio/Marion L. Steele HS) started and pitched five innings, striking out three. Zack Terrill (Lorain, Ohio/Brookside HS) worked 2.1 innings in relief, striking out three.
Elimination Bracket – LCCC 3, Owens 10
Owens Community College used two early home runs and a late three-run inning to defeat LCCC 10-3 to eliminate them from postseason play Wednesday evening.
Kania put the Commodores on the board in the second inning with an RBI single that scored Gonzalez. Gonzalez finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Sanders added two hits and a walk.
Luke Holtzman (Avon, Ohio/Avon HS) collected two hits, including an RBI double in the seventh inning that scored Reily Teigeler (Freeport, Mich./Lakewood HS) who recorded his first hit of the season. Holtzman also struck out six over three innings in relief.
Kent tripled and scored a run in the sixth inning before Adam Lee (Englewood, Fla./Charlotte HS) followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-2. Lee finished with a hit and an RBI, while Jackson Frame (Newcastle, Australia/Callaghan HS) added a hit.
Lee came up to the plate as the tying run in the top of the seventh inning with the bases loaded but his line shot into center was snagged thanks to a diving catch by the Owens centerfielder, stifling the comeback effort by the Commodores.
On the mound, Nick Schuster (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria HS) started and pitched five innings, striking out two. Holtzman worked the final three innings in relief, recording six strikeouts.
LCCC finishes the season 15-30 overall, marking a seven-win improvement from the 2025 campaign and the most victories by a varsity baseball team since the program joined the NJCAA under first-year Head Coach Jake Solomon.
