Commodores Split Back-to-Back Matches

September 18, 2025 - - The Lorain County Community College women's volleyball team split back-to-back matches this week, rallying for a dramatic five-set road win at Penn State Shenango on Tuesday before dropping their home opener Wednesday night, falling in four sets to Lakeland Community College.

 

On Tuesday, in Sharon, Pa., the Commodores showed grit and resilience, outlasting Penn State Shenango in a five-set thriller (22-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-23, 15-13).  The victory marked their second straight five-set win and improved their record to 3-4 overall at the time.  With the score 14-13 in the decisive fifth set, Leasya Castro (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) made a diving play to keep the ball alive, setting up the Commodores' final point and the match-clinching win.

 

Gabriella Habeck (Huron, Ohio/Edison HS) and Sydney Robinson (Oberlin, Ohio/Firelands HS) powered the attack, combining for 35 kills. Habeck posted 18 kills, 19 digs, and a .342 hitting percentage, while Robinson added 17 kills, 3 service aces, and 7 digs.  Setter Madelyn Peters (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville HS) turned in a complete performance with 28 assists, 9 kills, 6 service aces, and 7 digs.  Defensively, Ally Rumancik (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Olmsted Falls HS) collected 18 digs, and Castro chipped in 5 digs along with 3 aces.

 

As a team, LCCC finished the night with 59 kills, 64 digs, and 15 aces, including a blistering .615 hitting percentage in the deciding fifth set.

 

Returning home on September 17, the Commodores kept the momentum early but ultimately fell to Lakeland Community College in four sets (21-25, 26-24, 16-25, 19-25) inside the Ewing Activities Center.  After nearly taking the opener, LCCC stormed back to win set two in extra points, 26-24, before Lakeland pulled away in sets three and four.

 

Habeck once again paced the offense with a standout all-around effort, finishing with 20 kills, 23 digs, and a .271 hitting percentage.  Robinson added 11 kills, while Peters tallied 28 assists, 7 kills, 5 aces, and 14 digs.  Rumancik anchored the back row with 36 digs, and Castro added 8 digs and a service ace.

LCCC will head back on the road for a pair of conference matches this weekend.  The Commodores take on Clark State College on Friday, September 19 at 6 p.m., followed by a Saturday morning tilt with Edison State Community College at 11 a.m.
