LCCC Volleyball Opens 2022 Season With Win Against Edison State, 3-2

August 22, 2022 - - Lorain County Community College's volleyball team opened up the 2022 season with a conference win against Edison State Community College on Saturday (25-15, 23-25, 20-25, 25-19, 15-13).  The Commodores went the distance with the Chargers, winning the fourth and fifth sets to pick up their first win against Edison State since October 5, 2019.

After taking the first set easily, LCCC (1-0) dropped the second and third games as Edison State (1-1) zeroed in on their second straight victory.  However, the Commodores responded winning 25-19 in game four and scratching out a win in the deciding set, 15-13.  It is the third straight season that the Commodores have started with a victory.

"In the sets we won, we played some very clean games," said LCCC Head Coach Ted Whitsel, now in his ninth season with the Commodores. "The team responded well to some adversity to scrap out a road win to start the season."

LCCC was backed by the offensive dominance of Chelsey Farris (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria HS).  The sophomore from Elyria had 21 kills hitting .472, including five solo block kills with on e assist.  Izabel Santo Domingo (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria HS), Maggie Riley (Elyria, Ohio/Midview HS), and Lexa Bunevich (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood HS) all had double-digit digs for the Commodores.  Santo Domingo also had six service aces.  Bunevich had three service aces with 17 digs. 

Riley, along with second year player Jordan Benware (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake HS), each had a day pacing the offense with 25 and 20 assists, respectively.

The Commodores will open up their home slate of matches this Wednesday, August 24, 2022, against the Finger Lakes Community College Lakers.  Match begins at 6 p.m. inside the Ewing Activities Center on LCCC's Elyria campus. General admission is $5 while LCCC students get in free with their student ID.
