Volleyball Cruises by Finger Lakes CC, 3-0; Travels to Owens Invitational Next
August 25, 2022 - - The Lorain County Community College volleyball team improved to 2-0 after dismantling the defending NJCAA Region III Champion Finger Lakes Community College (0-1) in three straight sets (25-16, 25-19, 25-12). It is the first time since the 2019 season that LCCC has won the first two matches of the season.
"We took care of business tonight," said Ted Whitsel, who is in his ninth season as head coach of the Commodores. "We continued to work on our setter-to-hitter connections."
MJ Blair (Lorain, Ohio/North Ridgeville HS) led the way with 11 kills for the Commodores, hitting .364 with three digs.
Josie Filice (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood HS) and Abbey Williams (North Ridgeville, Ohio/First Baptist Christian) each had six kills.
Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Player of the Week Chelsey Farris (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria HS) recorded five kills in just 9 total attacks for a .556 hitting percentage. Farris also tallied four digs, two services aces, and a solo block.
Shawny Hess (Oberlin, Ohio/Firelands HS) and Maggie Riley (Elyria, Ohio/Midview HS) each chipped in four kills with Riley collecting eight digs and a team-high 19 assists. Jordan Benware (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake HS) also collected 11 assists for LCCC.
The Commodores will travel to Owens Community College on Saturday August 27, 2022 to play three matches in the Owens Invitational. First match starts at 11 a.m. against Jackson College, second match begins at 12:30 p.m. against St. Clair County Community College and the final match starts at 2:30 p.m. against Mott Community College.
LCCC returns home Tuesday, August 30, 2022, to face the No. 1 ranked, NJCAA DIII two-time defending champion Owens Community College Express at 6 p.m.
