Schmitz Named NJCAA Player of the Week
February 11, 2026 - - Following her recognition as Player of the Week for the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference, Lorain County Community College women's basketball player Abbey Schmitz (Amherst, Ohio/Firelands HS) received another accolade this week as she has been named the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Player of the Week following her performances from Feb. 2-8.
Schmitz averaged over 35 points across three games, leading LCCC to wins over Community Christian College and Clark State College.
She opened the week with 33 points in an 84-50 victory over Community Christian on Feb. 2, shooting 14-of-28 from the field while adding 12 rebounds and 12 assists to record her second triple-double of the season. She tied the program's single-game record with eight steals (Danah Ewing, Feb. 2, 2022) and set a new single-game record with 12 assists.
On Feb. 4 against Bryant & Stratton College, Schmitz scored 32 points, going 11-of-12 from the free-throw line while adding nine rebounds.
She closed the week with 41 points in an 88-67 win at Clark State on Feb. 7, shooting 15-of-28 from the field and 6-of-10 from three-point range. Her 41 points and 15 field goals established new LCCC single-game records, and her six three-point field goals tied the program's single-game mark previously shared by Schmitz and four others (Madi Bonner, Carrie Carlson, Hannah Oehlstrom, and Elana Maley). During the game, Schmitz surpassed 1,000 career points, becoming the first woman in program history to reach the milestone.
Schmitz's national honor marks the second consecutive week an LCCC student-athlete has earned NJCAA Division III Player of the Week recognition, following Ike Rowser's selection on February 4, 2026.
