Schmitz’s Triple Double Leads Commodores Over Walsh JV

November 24, 2025 - - The Lorain County Community College women's basketball team broke through for its first win of the season Monday night, defeating Walsh University's JV squad 76–66 inside the Ewing Activities Center Gymnasium.

The Commodores were fueled by a dominant all-around performance from sophomore forward Abbey Schmitz (Amherst, Ohio/Firelands HS), who delivered a triple-double and scored LCCC's final seven points to close out the victory. Schmitz was outstanding on both ends of the floor, finishing with 25 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, two steals, and two blocks while shooting 8-of-19 from the field and 7-of-9 at the free throw line.

LCCC had to claw back after trailing by as many as nine in the second quarter. Following a cold start, the Commodores chipped away and eventually grabbed a 42–40 lead midway through the third quarter on a basket from Bri'Anna Slaughter (Lorain, Ohio/Brookside HS), who finished the night with 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

Walsh responded to reclaim a 54–49 advantage entering the final period, but the fourth quarter belonged to the Commodores. LCCC opened the frame with back-to-back threes from Abi Rhoades (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion HS) and Chloe Meng (Elyria, Ohio/First Baptist Christian), immediately erasing the deficit.

Meng knocked down three triples in the fourth and finished with 17 points, six assists, and four rebounds. Her long-range accuracy, combined with Schmitz's late-game scoring burst, helped LCCC surge ahead and ultimately build its largest lead of the night—10 points in the final seconds.

Rhoades also provided a key spark off the bench, recording 7 rebounds to go with her nine points, while Clara McCown (Oberlin, Ohio/Oberlin HS) chipped in 6 points and 6 rebounds in her 31 minutes of action.

As a team, LCCC dominated key categories, posting 58 total rebounds, including 17 on the offensive glass, and outscoring Walsh 27–12 in the decisive fourth quarter. The Commodores also earned a 14–6 advantage in bench points and held Walsh to 23.8 percent shooting in the final period.
