Austin Lukachko Moves Into The Hearthstone Finals; Valorant Advances to the Final Eight
April 12, 2026 - - The Lorain County Community College Esports program opened NJCAAE Division III postseason competition during the week of April 6–10, highlighted by a deep tournament run from Austin Lukachko and continued team success in Valorant. The Commodores competed across multiple playoff brackets, with several advancing into late-round matchups and championship contention.
Chess (Division III Tournament)
Austin Lukachko (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville HS) turned in a strong postseason showing, advancing to the semifinals of the NJCAAE Opt-In Tournament. Lukachko opened with a win over Central Community College before defeating No. 2 seed Vicente Merino of NorthWest Arkansas Community College. Lukachko's run came to an end in the final four with a loss to Hutchinson Community College.
Megan Dobos (Oberlin, Ohio/Oberlin HS) earned a first-round victory over Northeastern Junior College before falling to the tournament's top seed. Robert Smith (Lorain, Ohio/Firelands HS) dropped a narrow opening-round match.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Division III Tournament)
Jason Thomas (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) advanced to the round of 16 with a pair of wins, including a 3-0 victory over Crowder College. Thomas' run concluded with a loss to Heartland Community College. Traceton Bell (Oberlin, Ohio/Oberlin HS) competed in the opening round, falling to Marshalltown Community College.
Hearthstone (Division III Tournament)
Austin Lukachko (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville HS) delivered one of the top performances of the week, advancing to the NJCAAE Division III championship match. Entering as the No. 8 seed, Lukachko opened with a 3-0 win over Finger Lakes Community College before pulling off a major upset against No. 1 seed and LCCC teammate Xander Taylor (Elyria, Ohio/Huron HS), the fall Division III national champion, with a 3-2 victory.
Lukachko continued his run with a 3-1 semifinal win over Finger Lakes Community College to secure a spot in the finals.
Veronica Gibson (Sandusky, Ohio/Trinity HS) also advanced to the semifinals, earning a 3-2 win in the opening round before falling to Salt Lake Community College.
Lukachko is scheduled to compete for the national championship on April 14 against Salt Lake Community College.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Division III Tournament)
Braden Reichert (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Avon HS) and Collin Zielinski (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted HS) both competed in postseason play. Reichert fell in his opening matchup against Somerset Community College, while Zielinski dropped his contest against NorthWest Arkansas Community College.
Valorant (Division III Tournament)
The No. 3-seeded Valorant team of Austin Lukachko (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville HS), Brody Taylor (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville HS), Braylon Zeman (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville HS), Kylie Zeman (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville HS), Tyler Misconish (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville HS), and Oliver Chambers (Collins, Ohio/Edison HS) opened postseason play with a 2-0 sweep over Richard Bland College.
LCCC advances to face the College of DuPage on April 13 in the next round of the NJCAAE playoffs.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Crew Battle (Division III Tournament)
The Commodores' crew battle team of Gabriel Beckstrom (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS), Traceton Bell (Oberlin, Ohio/Oberlin HS), Braydon Dobos, Austin Lukachko (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville HS), Jerron Warner (Avon, Ohio/Avon HS), and Christopher Gonet (Lorain, Ohio/LCCC Early College) opened with a 2-0 win over Iowa Western Community College before falling in a tightly contested 2-1 match against Marshalltown Community College.
Looking Ahead
Postseason competition continues this week as Lukachko competes for a national championship in Hearthstone on April 14. The Valorant team will look to continue its postseason run on April 13.
Additionally, NJCAAE Division I postseason play begins April 14, with Jerron Warner (Avon, Ohio/Avon HS) set to compete as the No. 8 seed against top-seeded Brookdale Community College in the East 1 Region bracket.

LCCC's Esports team competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE), which is divided into three competition divisions:
Division 1: The highest level of NJCAAE competition, featuring teams composed of eligible students.
Division 2: The mid-level competition, also for teams of eligible students.
Division 3: The most accessible level, open to participants who do not have to meet student eligibility requirements but must be associated with LCCC.
The NJCAAE has two seasons: fall (September–December) and spring (February–April). Both seasons last seven weeks before the postseason begins. LCCC has players competing across all three divisions, and full-time students can choose to participate in any tier.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – A fighting game featuring characters from the Nintendo universe, played on the Nintendo Switch. Players can compete in 1v1 best-of-five matches or Crew Battle, a 3v3 elimination-style format.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – A racing game featuring Nintendo characters, also played on the Nintendo Switch.
Valorant – A PC first-person shooter where teams of five compete in a best-of-three format. One team attempts to plant and detonate a spike, while the opposing team tries to defuse it.
Overwatch 2 – Another first-person shooter, in which teams compete using unique hero characters.
Fortnite – LCCC began competing in this battle royale game in 2024.
Marvel Rivals – A 6v6 third-person shooter featuring characters from the Marvel Universe, with LCCC set to begin competition in spring 2025.
Rainbow 6 Siege - a tactical, online multiplayer shooter where two teams of five compete in high-stakes scenarios like hostage rescues and bomb defusals. The game features intense, close-quarters combat within highly destructible indoor environments, forcing players to strategize using specialized "Operators" with unique skills and gadgets.
Madden – A football simulation game.
Tekken & Street Fighter – Both hand-to-hand combat fighting games.
Hearthstone - Building upon the existing lore of the Warcraft series, a turn-based card game between two opponents, using constructed decks of 30 cards along with a selected hero with a unique power.
Call of Duty: Warzone - Battle royale style first-person shooter game
Chess - The classic strategy board game for two players, who each move 16 pieces of six different types across a 64-square checkered board. The objective is to checkmate the opponent's king, which occurs when the king is under attack and has no legal move to escape.
