Rogers and Cabrera Stay Unbeaten In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
March 11, 2024 - - The Lorain County Community College #CommodoreEsports team continued the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE) spring season this week with competitions in Marvel Rivals, Tekken, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Monday and Tuesday.
On Tuesday, LCCC had three Smash players competing in Tiers 1 and 2: Robert Rogers (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) in Tier 1, James O'Reilly (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville HS), and Caleb Cabrera (Amherst, Ohio/Marion L. Steele HS) in Tier 2.
Rogers cruised to an easy 3-0 win in his first match against Brookdale Community College and followed it up with another 3-0 sweep over Finger Lakes Community College. He remains undefeated in Tier 1 play at 8-0 and has yet to drop a single round this spring, holding an impressive 24-0 record in rounds played.
Cabrera secured a solid 4-1 victory over Mott Community College, with his only loss coming in round three—his first dropped round of the spring. He improves to 12-1 in rounds played. Cabrera holds the single-season rounds record with 30 straight wins.
O'Reilly faced a tough matchup against Lackawanna College, dropping the first three rounds. However, he gained momentum, winning back-to-back rounds to stay in contention. Despite having his opponent on their final stock and pushing toward a decisive seventh round, he ultimately fell in round six.
Xander Taylor (Elyria, Ohio/Huron HS) picked up his first win in Hearthstone on Tuesday in Tier 3 competition vs. Southwestern Oregon Community College. He improves to 1-2 on the spring.
On Monday, the LCCC Tier 3 Marvel Rivals team—consisting of Jacob Brown (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria HS), Oliver Chambers (Collins, Ohio/Edison HS), Kylie Zeman (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville HS), James O'Reilly (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville/LCJVS), Mason Henderson (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion HS), and Noah Duncan (Walnut Cove, N.C.)—fell to Western Technical College in three rounds, dropping their record to 1-1.
In other Tier 3 competition, Nehemiah Hopkins (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria HS) picked up his first win of the spring in Tekken, defeating Southwest Wisconsin Technical College with a dominant 3-0 performance. His spring record now stands at 1-2.

LCCC's Esports team competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE), which is divided into three competition tiers:
Tier 1 – Premier Series (PS): The highest level of NJCAAE competition, featuring teams composed of eligible students.
Tier 2 – Contender Series (CS): The mid-level competition, also for teams of eligible students.
Tier 3 – Open Series (OS): The most accessible level, open to participants who do not have to meet student eligibility requirements but must be associated with LCCC.
The NJCAAE has two seasons: fall (September–December) and spring (February–April). Both seasons last seven weeks before the postseason begins. LCCC has players competing across all three tiers, and full-time students can choose to participate in any tier.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – A fighting game featuring characters from the Nintendo universe, played on the Nintendo Switch. Players can compete in 1v1 best-of-five matches or Crew Battle, a 3v3 elimination-style format.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – A racing game featuring Nintendo characters, also played on the Nintendo Switch.
Valorant – A PC first-person shooter where teams of five compete in a best-of-three format. One team attempts to plant and detonate a spike, while the opposing team tries to defuse it.
Overwatch 2 – Another first-person shooter, in which teams compete using unique hero characters.
Fortnite – LCCC began competing in this battle royale game in 2024.
Marvel Rivals – A 6v6 third-person shooter featuring characters from the Marvel Universe, with LCCC set to begin competition in spring 2025.
Madden – A football simulation game.
Tekken & Street Fighter – Both hand-to-hand combat fighting games.
Hearthstone - Building upon the existing lore of the Warcraft series, a turn-based card game between two opponents, using constructed decks of 30 cards along with a selected hero with a unique power.
Call of Duty: Warzone - Battle royale style first-person shooter game
