Commodores Take One From Owens Express Over the Weekend

April 19, 2026 - - The Lorain County Community College baseball team went 1-3 against Owens Community College over the weekend, dropping a pair of close contests on Friday before splitting Sunday's doubleheader.  The Commodores (11-19) held leads in all four games but were unable to hold on in three, as Owens used late rallies to secure wins—including a comeback in the series finale that extended into extra innings.

 

Game One (Friday): Owens 5, LCCC 4

LCCC jumped out to an early lead but was unable to hold on in a 5-4 loss to Owens Community College on Friday at 5/3 Field.

 

LCCC struck first in the opening inning as Brady Eckert (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville HS) grounded into a double play, allowing Carlos Grell (Cleveland, Ohio/Garret Morgan HS) to score.  The Commodores added another run in the inning when Jackson Frame (Newcastle, Austrailia/Callaghan HS) delivered an RBI single to score Adam Lee (Englewood, Fla./Charlotte HS) for a 2-0 advantage.

 

Owens answered with a run in the first and took the lead with a two-run third inning.  The Commodores regained control in the fifth when Eckert came through with a two-run single, scoring Lee and Grell to make it 4-3.

 

Lee finished with a hit, a double, and two runs scored, while Eckert drove in two runs. Frame added an RBI, accounting for LCCC's three RBIs on the day.

 

On the mound, Nick Schuster (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria HS) pitched a complete game, working 6.0 innings with five strikeouts.

 

The Express delivered the decisive blow in the sixth inning, using a two-run triple to take a 5-4 lead.  LCCC was unable to respond in the final frame, as Owens held on to secure the win.

Game Two (Friday): Owens 5, LCCC 2

LCCC held an early lead but could not contain a late surge, falling to Owens Community College 5-2 in the second game of Friday's doubleheader.

 

They opened the scoring in the third inning as Michael Gonzalez (Cleveland, Ohio/John Marshall HS) delivered an RBI single to bring home Frame for a 1-0 lead. Owens answered with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning to even the score.

 

The Commodores regained the lead in the fourth when Eckert was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing Daithin Kent (Union City, Pa./Union City HS) to score and make it 2-1.

 

Gonzalez, Eckert, and Luke Holtzman (Avon, Ohio/Avon HS) each recorded an RBI, while Kent added a double and scored a run.  Lee and Grell also contributed hits as LCCC finished with six in the game.

 

On the mound, Dylan Coughlin (Amherst, Ohio/Marion L. Steele HS) pitched 5.0 innings and struck out three.  Ethan Taylor (Elyria, Ohio/Midview HS) and Leo Soneson (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood HS) combined for the final inning, recording one strikeout.

 

Owens broke through in the sixth inning, scoring four runs to take control of the game.  A two-run triple followed by a sacrifice fly and additional run-producing play pushed the Express ahead 5-2.  The Commodores were unable to respond in the seventh.

 

Game Three (Sunday): LCCC 13, Owens 11

LCCC used a pair of explosive early innings and held off a late rally to defeat Owens Community College, 13-11, in Sunday's opener at ForeFront Field.

 

LCCC fell behind 3-0 in the first inning but responded immediately with a seven-run bottom half and added six more runs in the third to build a 13-5 lead. The Commodores collected 12 hits and drew nine walks in the win.

 

Grell finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, and two stolen bases, while Lee added a hit, two runs scored, and two walks. Soneson recorded two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI, and Eckert drove in two runs.

 

Jacob Sanders (Columbia, Ohio/Columbia Station HS) contributed a triple and two RBIs, Frame went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Kent led the offense with three hits and two RBIs. Coughlin added a hit, while Gonzalez reached base via walk.

 

On the mound, Holtzman earned the win, tossing five innings while allowing five runs (four earned) and striking out six.  Zack Terrill (Lorain, Ohio/Brookside HS) worked one inning in relief, and Soneson closed the game despite Owens scoring twice in the seventh.

 

Owens mounted a late push with four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh, but LCCC held on to secure the 13-11 victory.

 

Game Four (Sunday): Owens 3, LCCC 2 (8 innings)

The Commodores dropped a tightly contested extra-inning battle to Owens Community College, 3-2, in Sunday's finale at ForeFront Field.

 

Owens struck first in the fifth inning, taking advantage of an error to grab a 1-0 lead.  LCCC responded in the bottom half, as Sanders scored on a fielder's choice by Kent to tie the game.  Later in the inning, Grell delivered a bunt single to bring home Frame, giving the Commodores a 2-1 advantage.

 

The Express answered in the seventh inning, tying the game at 2-2 on an RBI single. In the eighth, Owens took the lead for good with an RBI triple to center field, making it 3-2.

 

Grell finished 1-for-4 with an RBI, while Lee recorded two hits. Eckert, Sanders, and Coughlin each added a hit, and Kent drove in a run.  Frame also scored.

 

On the mound, Cason Pelko (Grafton, Ohio/Midview HS) tossed 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out one.  Terrill allowed one run over 1.2 innings, while Taylor added a scoreless inning of relief.  Soneson worked the final two innings allowing two runs.

The Commodores travel to Cuyahoga Community College on Tuesday to take on the Triceratops in a double-header starting at 5 p.m.
