Commodores Split With Miami-Hamilton In Weekend Doubleheaders
March 7-8, 2026 - - The Lorain County Community College baseball team split a four-game weekend series with Miami University-Hamilton. The Commodores earned a 4-3 victory and fell 17-2 in Saturday's doubleheader at ForeFront Field in Avon before splitting Sunday's games at Miami-Hamilton with a 3-1 loss in game one before bouncing back with a 5-1 win in game two.
Saturday, Game One Recap
Miami-Hamilton struck first with two runs in the opening inning of game one on Saturday, but the Commodores answered in the fourth when Michael Gonzalez (Cleveland, Ohio/John Marshall) drove in Leo Soneson (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) with a groundout to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Harriers added another run in the fifth before LCCC responded with its biggest offensive inning of the game.
The Commodores took the lead with a three-run fifth inning. Jacob Kania (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/Berea-Midpark) started the rally with a double before Jacob Sanders (Columbia Station, Ohio/Columbia) followed with an RBI double to score Kania. Jackson Frame (Newcastle, Australia/Callaghan) plated Sanders, and Brady Eckert (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) capped the inning with an RBI double that scored Frame to give LCCC a 4-3 advantage.
LCCC's pitching staff made the lead stand the rest of the way. After Ethan Taylor (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) worked 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the win in relief, Soneson closed the door in the seventh. Soneson struck out the first two batters he faced before working around a walk and a two-out double to secure the save and seal the Commodores' 4-3 victory.
Saturday, Game Two Recap
LCCC dropped the second game of Saturday's doubleheader to Miami University Hamilton, 17-2.
The Commodores recorded four hits and produced runs in both the first and fifth innings. Sanders reached base and scored both LCCC runs, including the Commodores' first run of the game in the opening inning after Miami Hamilton put LCCC in a 3-0 hole in the top half of the inning. Soneson delivered LCCC's first RBI with a line-drive single to center that brought Sanders home.
In the fifth, Sanders reached base again and scored when Frame grounded into a fielder's choice. Jadon Tucker (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown Madison), Eckert, and Kania each recorded a hit for LCCC.
On the mound, Luke Holtzman (Avon, Ohio/Avon) made the start, striking out three in 2.1 innings of work. Zack Terrill (Lorain, Ohio/Brookside) provided 2.2 innings in relief and struck out two batters, while Hector Recio (Cleveland, Ohio/Garrett Morgan School) also appeared on the mound for the Commodores.
Sunday, Game One Recap
The Commodores dropped the opener of Sunday's doubleheader at Miami University Hamilton, falling 3-1 despite a strong pitching performance from the Commodores.
LCCC took the first lead of the game in the second inning. Carlos Grell (Cleveland, Ohio/Garrett Morgan School) reached base and later scored when Dylan Coughlin (Amherst, Ohio/Marion L. Steele) delivered an RBI single to left field to give the Commodores a 1-0 advantage. Grell and Coughlin each recorded hits in the contest, while Eckert added the third LCCC hit with a single.
Miami-Hamilton answered with three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead. The Harriers scored once on an error, added another on a fielder's choice, and brought home the third run on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
After LCCC's run in the second inning, the Commodores were unable to generate additional offense, managing just one baserunner the rest of the game. On the mound, Alex Sayers (LaGrange, Ohio/Keystone) turned in a solid outing, pitching a complete six innings while allowing just three hits and one earned run with one walk.
Sunday, Game Two Recap
The Commodores earned their first road victory and second win of the season in game two, defeating Miami University Hamilton 5-1 thanks to solid pitching from Coughlin and Soneson.
The Commodores broke the game open with a four-run third inning. Tucker started the rally by scoring on an RBI single from Adam Lee (Homestead, Fla./Charlotte). Frame later came home on a bases-loaded walk to Eckert, and Soneson followed with a fielder's choice that allowed Sanders and Lee to score for a 4-0 advantage.
LCCC added an insurance run in the fourth inning when Grell crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Holtzman. Soneson led the Commodores at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance and an RBI, while Lee, Sanders, Tucker, and Gonzalez each contributed a hit.
On the mound, Coughlin delivered a strong outing, pitching 5.2 innings while allowing just four hits and one run — none earned — with seven strikeouts. Soneson closed the game with a scoreless inning, striking out two to secure the victory for the Commodores.
